  • Correll completes Neart na Gaoithe Cable Pull-In

The Correll Group, Cable Installation & Power Services Division is pleased to announce the successful completion of the first phase of a recent contract awarded by Prysmian Powerlink on the EDF Renewables UK and ESB owned Neart na Gaoithe (NnG) offshore wind farm.

The first and completed phase was for the pull-in of a 220kV HVAC export cable to each of two offshore substation platforms. The scope of work also consisted of the internal platform works on the south platform including; securing the subsea cable at the hang-off, stripping, routing & cleating the High Voltage (HV) cores to the switchgear, separating, installing and splicing the fibre optic cables. HV & OTDR testing was also performed following the completion of each export cable.

The second and final phase, scheduled for 2023, will involve the completion of the internal platforms works on the north platform.

NnG is a planned 450MW development area located in the North Sea off the south-east coast of Scotland. The offshore site is located approximately 15.5 km from Fife Ness, and 16 km from the Isle of May and will occupy an area of approximately 105km² .

The offshore wind farm will be equipped with 54 Siemens Gamesa SG 8.0-167 DD turbines with a tip height of 208m. The foundations will be laid at a water depth of up to 55m with the turbines planned to be spaced approximately 1km apart.

Energy from the offshore sub-station will be transmitted through two 37km-long export cables making landfall at Thorntonloch Beach in East Lothian. From the landfall point, an onshore cable will run underground for a distance of 12.3km to a land grid connection substation, near the Crystal Rig onshore wind farm in the Lammermuir Hills.

Expected to be fully operational by 2023, the NnG wind farm is expected to generate sufficient power for approximately 375,000 Scottish homes, while offsetting around 400,000 tonnes of CO² emissions each year.

Sam Dowey, Managing Director at Correll, commented; “It was extremely satisfying to complete this project and to be again working in close partnership with Prysmian Group, having collaborated on many previous projects”.
